  18. <p>     Every night up to 3,000 angry residents of Chateauguay,
  19. Quebec, gathered outside the barricade that Mohawk Indians
  20. raised across the approach to the Mercier Bridge, a major
  21. artery into Montreal. Rowdies grappled with police and burned
  22. effigies of Mohawks hanging from a lamppost. Since a policeman
  23. was killed two weeks ago during an assault on another Mohawk
  24. blockage at Oka, 19 miles to the west, that town and Chateauguay
  25. have become scenes of an edgy standoff over the volatile issue
  26. of Indian land rights. The Indians have been protesting plans
  27. to expand a golf course into a forest that they say contains
  28. a sacred burial ground.

  30. <p>     The problem grew last week as Native leaders across Canada
  31. declared their solidarity with the Mohawks. The chiefs said
  32. they would take their case to the U.N. and called on the world
  33. to impose economic sanctions against Canada to protest its
  34. treatment of Native peoples. The government of Prime Minister
  35. Brian Mulroney balked at negotiating under pressure, but said
  36. it would try to buy the land to transfer to the Natives--once
  37. the barricades came down.
